  • Member champion for Recreation Management

    Nick Cotton

County Council appointees (Cumbria County Council)

Member of the Finance and Resources Committee

    Biography

Born in Bristol, educated at Monmouth School and Oxford University, where he studied Modern Languages, Nick moved with his family to Kirkby Lonsdale in 2004, drawn to the beauty of the northern hills, to which he had been a regular visitor for 30 years.

Nick has travelled extensively in South America, Africa, Asia and Australasia. He combined his love of walking and climbing (he has climbed to over 18,000 ft on three continents) with a business importing handicraft to Britain, most notably articulated wooden snakes from South America.

A not entirely logical step saw him move from import-export into a career writing cycling guides. Over the past 20 years Nick has written over 50 books describing all types of UK cycle rides, including three aimed at cyclists wishing to explore the beautiful lanes and tracks of the Yorkshire Dales. More recently he has been involved in promoting the concept of an Electric Bike Network in the Yorkshire Dales. This enables people who do not have legs of steel to enjoy the scenery seen by bike on the area's network of lanes.

Nick became a Town Councillor for Kirkby Lonsdale in 2011, a district councillor for South Lakeland District Council in 2012 and a Cumbria County Councillor in 2013. In addition to his interests in cycling and walking, Nick enjoys conservation work, good food and wine, and intelligent conversation over a pint of real ale.

  • Brenda Gray

District Council appointees (South Lakeland District Council)

    Member of the Planning Committee

Member of the Finance and Resources Committee

    Biography

My parents were from London and Kent and before that from goodness knows where via Scotland and Ireland. I was born and grew up in the balmy south east and therefore I am English. As a child our school holidays were spent in the West Country on the Cornish coast, on the moors and the Quantock Hills. I spent the first 40 years of my adult life in York, except for a few years playing around in London and getting my corners knocked off and learning how the world works; something I did not learn at the convent school!  Most of my adult life has been and still is as Mum to four and Grandmum to four but part-time in between was spent in libraries, mainly academic but some public. Consequently I know a little about a lot which is useful. My children grew up with The Dales and North York moors and coast almost on their doorstep. After my family I am interested in the arts of all kinds, walking and sailing; though, as it turned out, being a councillor has steered a different course to that planned when I moved west in 2002. A common story, I guess!
